Kidney Failure

Kidney Failure (End Stage which both the kidneys shrink in their size and permanently lose their function. Such patients require Renal Replacement therapy in the form of Kidney Transplant or dialysis. The survival and quality of life is far better in Kidney Transplant as compared to dialysis. Patients on dialysis have a very low survival rate as compared to kidney Transplant due to several side effects such as heart attack, stroke, paralysis, anaemia, infections, gangrene of the fingers and toes and multiple other cardiovascular and metabolic disturbances.The Scientific Registry of Transplant (SRTR) data has also shown that patients on dialysis suffer more, die more and incur financial losses if they do no get a kidney transplant at the right moment.

Treatment

The sole aim of our treatment for Kidney Failure, is essentially to reinstate their functions. Kidney Transplant (Renal Transplant) from a living donor is advised, as the first-line treatment, for patients with kidney failure. A well planned and properly executed surgery, provides the best likelihood of success (i.e socially & financially sound life) and provides the highest chance of survival for several years or even decades to the patient. Non-operative treatment of kidney failure is done with dialysis, which is characterized with poor survival and early death. Apart from this, it needs to be repeated every two to three times a week for most of the patients, which is both hectic and time consuming for them. Kidney transplant is generally preferred with a living or a deceased donor which is the only modality, offering long-term survival, for a normal and better quality of life after the transplant. The patients who receive a transplant live almost two to three times longer than what they would have lived on dialysis. Data has clearly shown that patients who receive a kidney transplant have far less complications and suffer less financial loss. The sooner they receive a transplant, the better is the outcome of their transplant.

Dr Ranjan is a specialist urological surgeon and a pioneering transplant specialist in India, who has been working on the forefront of kidney failure and transplant since a decade. Primarily based at Chandigarh, he established the comprehensive transplant center at Fortis Hospital Mohali, in 2011.
